Hello All. In honor of Juneteenth becoming a national holiday and the actual date, I have decided to use it as my search term for this week. Let's see what kind of websites we get.
To rate them, I will be using the following key:
0 – This is not a usability problem
1 – Cosmetic problem
2 – minor usability problem
3 – major usability problem
4 – usability catastrophe; imperative to fix
1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juneteenth (Rating 1) - Wikipedia is a popular user-contributed data website that allows users to search a vast variety of topics to get general information about the topic. To really understand the website, I navigated away from the Juneteenth post and just looked at the main landing page. For this site to be user contribution-friendly, I really kind of enjoy it. My favorite thing, no distracting advertisements. Everything is uniform. Even though the website gives off a higher quality Craigslist vibe, it is useable and really just needs a cosmetic face-lift.
2. https://juneteenth.com/ (Rating 4) - Interestingly enough, the second website that came up on the list looks like it's some type of official website, but something really strange has happened. The website is not up and useable. It may have crashed or they are updating it, but I thought it was a good idea to use since the holiday was yesterday and the domain should be active.
3. https://www.pbs.org/ (Rating 0) - PBS is a television network that specializes in broadcasts regarding the human experience and education. The initial web page I went to brought me to this subset of the PBS site that was based on the TV show Many Rivers to Cross ( a show about the African American experience). This site was well maintained although it had a banner stating it wasn't active. I truly couldn't tell because it looked good. Upon branching to the main PBS site, I saw the same attention to detail, it was clear, clean and highlighted the topics that were important to them.
4. https://www.history.com/ (Rating 2) - This is also a television broadcasting company, however, it is for-profit and to be honest, it shows. A bunch of ads popped up and then some automatic videos started playing about whatever they were selling. In order to review the information I came to the website for, I had to maneuver a lot. If this wasn't there, I may have ranked this website better. As you can see from the screenshot below, the first half of the page was dedicated to ad space. When you navigate to the main landing page, it is not as bad, but I didn't need the information from there.
5. https://nmaahc.si.edu/ (Rating 0) - This website is for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture. I actually went to this museum in 2018 in Washington DC and had an amazing time viewing all of the exhibits curating the culture and history. It was truly beautiful and I left feeling inspired. I feel like the company tried its best to give off this feeling on the website as well. It is clean, you get information about the museum, it is easy to navigate, and just has something for every type of guest. I would definitely recommend it.
